Bat Attacks
There are millions of bats in the United States. Some cities have especially high bat populations, and there are even single colonies with over a million bats in them. The vast majority of bats are actually quite beneficial, as they eat huge numbers of mosquitoes and other insects. These bats rarely cause any danger for humans.
Some of the more feared bats, especially vampire bats, do actually feed on blood, but it is usually from the blood of livestock or other animals. They are frightening only because of the myths surrounding them and the exaggerated stories that people like to tell in order to scare others.
Bat attacks are rare, but they can be quite serious in some cases. Rabies is the biggest source of health problems related to bats. Rabies is fatal in humans if not treated quickly, though it can be successfully dealt with if the infected person seeks treatment promptly. Most rabies transmissions are the result of a person handling a downed bat, as it is often the disease that leads to the animal’s death.
Most people can avoid bat attacks and any problem resulting from them simply by avoiding downed bats. However, there are some very unfortunate circumstances in which bats will attack a person or will transmit rabies to them when the person has done nothing to instigate this. In such case, it is crucial to seek immediate medical care.
