Schoolyard Accidents
Our children are our most prized possessions. When we take them to school, we expect the best care for them and safe places to learn and play. Unfortunately, hundreds of cases of accidents and injuries occur each year on schoolyards due to neglect from supervisors, administrators, and even playground equipment manufacturers.
All hazards should be cleared from the paths that children make within a playground. Barriers should be set up between a playground and any outside hazards such as bodies of waters, cliffs, and roads. There should be enough drainage points on the grounds to prevent water pooling and certain materials should not be exposed to the sun for long periods of time due to heat absorption. All these safety tips require constant maintenance by school administrators.
Supervision
The most important thing that a school yard can have is supervision over the children. When children do not have someone watching over their activities and the equipment they are using, there is a much higher risk of accidents. Children should be removed immediately after an accident and assessed for any injuries. Supervisors must also make sure that children are not being exposed to too much heat and are also not playing to the point of fatigue.
Children should also be restricted to using equipment that is appropriate for their respective ages. Schoolyard equipment should also be cleaned and maintained regularly to prevent injuries. Manufacturers may be held liable for faulty equipment that causes harm to children.
